Sage has been the default choice for UK small business accounting for decades. Odoo has grown fast over the last ten years as a full business system rather than an accounts package. If you are comparing them, the first thing to understand is that you are often comparing different categories of software.
What each one is
Sage is a family of products. Sage Business Cloud Accounting (formerly Sage One) is a simple cloud accounts tool for small businesses. Sage 50 is the long-standing desktop accounts product. Sage 200 and Sage Intacct are larger systems with stock, projects and more. Sage Payroll is a separate product again. Which one you are comparing matters enormously.
Odoo is a single modular system. Accounting is one module alongside sales, CRM, stock, purchasing, manufacturing, projects, HR, eCommerce and many more, all sharing one database. You switch modules on as you need them.
Where Sage is stronger
- Familiarity. Most UK accountants and bookkeepers know Sage. Finding help is easy.
- Payroll. Sage Payroll is mature, well supported and fully UK-compliant.
- Simplicity for accounts-only businesses. If you only need bookkeeping, VAT and invoicing, Sage Business Cloud Accounting does it well at a low monthly cost.
Where Odoo is stronger
- Breadth. Stock, sales, purchasing, manufacturing, projects and CRM are all native. In Sage these are either separate products, add-ons or missing at the small business level.
- Customisation. Odoo is open source. Fields, workflows, reports and whole modules can be adapted. Sage products are much harder to bend.
- One customer record. Sales, operations and finance see the same customer, the same order and the same stock figure.
- Growth path. Adding a warehouse, a second company or an online store is a module, not a migration.
Cost comparison
For accounting only, Sage's entry-level cloud product is cheaper than an Odoo Enterprise licence. The comparison flips once you need operations. A Sage setup that covers accounts, stock and CRM typically means Sage 50 or 200 plus add-ons, at which point Odoo's per-user pricing is usually competitive and often lower. Implementation costs are similar in nature: both need setup, data migration and training. Our Odoo cost guide goes into the detail.
UK compliance
Both handle UK VAT and Making Tax Digital submissions. Sage's UK localisation is longer established. Odoo's UK localisation is solid for VAT and financial reporting; for payroll, many Odoo users keep a specialist payroll product or their accountant's system and integrate it.
When to stay on Sage
If you are a services business with no stock, a straightforward sales process and an accountant who runs everything in Sage, there is no reason to move. Your problem is not accounting software.
When businesses move to Odoo
The trigger is nearly always operations. Stock is out of control, orders are tracked in spreadsheets, sales and accounts disagree about what has been invoiced, or a second site or company has appeared. At that point the choice is between bolting more products onto Sage or moving to one system. See ERP vs accounting software for the signs.
Making the move
A Sage to Odoo migration usually keeps Sage available read-only for historical records, migrates customers, suppliers, products, the chart of accounts and opening balances into Odoo, and runs the two in parallel for a short period at a VAT quarter boundary. It is a well-trodden path. We walk through the general process in ERP implementation step by step.

Key takeaways
- Sage is strong on UK accounting and payroll and is what many businesses start with. Odoo is broader, covering stock, sales, manufacturing and more in one system.
- Odoo is open source and modular, which makes it easier to customise and to add capability as you grow.
- Sage's newer cloud products vary a lot in scope, so compare the specific product, not the brand.
- Businesses usually move from Sage to Odoo when they need operations and accounts in the same system.
