Odoo comes in two editions, and the names cause confusion. "Community" sounds like a lightweight trial; "Enterprise" sounds like it is only for large companies. Neither is true. Here is what each one actually includes and how to decide.
Community edition
Free, open source, and downloadable by anyone. You install it on your own server or with a hosting provider, and you are responsible for updates, backups and security. It includes core apps: CRM, sales, purchase, inventory, manufacturing, project, website, basic invoicing and more.
There is no official Odoo support; you rely on a partner, the community or your own team.
Enterprise edition
Paid per user per month. It includes everything in Community plus additional apps and features, notably:
- Full accounting: bank synchronisation, reconciliation tools, financial reports, asset management, MTD for VAT submissions, and more. Community's invoicing is basic by comparison.
- Studio: a point-and-click tool for adding fields, views and simple automations without code (on the higher plan).
- Extra apps: helpdesk, field service, planning, quality, PLM, marketing automation, sign, subscriptions, rental and others.
- Mobile apps, barcode scanning improvements and other polish.
- Hosting on Odoo Online, or Odoo.sh for custom deployments.
- Official support and upgrade services.
The accounting question
For most UK businesses, the decision comes down to accounting. If you want to run your books in Odoo with bank feeds, reconciliation and MTD submissions, you need Enterprise. Community's invoicing can raise invoices and bills, but it is not a full accounting system.
If you plan to keep Xero, Sage or QuickBooks for accounts and use Odoo purely for operations, Community becomes more viable.
Who chooses Community
- Businesses with an in-house developer or a technical partner.
- Companies with simple needs that map onto the core apps.
- Organisations that want full control of hosting for data or policy reasons.
- Businesses keeping their existing accounting software.
You are trading licence fees for responsibility. Hosting, backups, security patches and version upgrades are on you or your partner, and those have a cost too.
Who chooses Enterprise
Most businesses that want a complete system, particularly with accounting, and prefer predictable subscription pricing with official support and hosting. It is what we recommend for the majority of clients, because the accounting alone justifies it and the hosting and upgrade path remove a lot of risk.
Cost
Enterprise licences are per user per month, billed annually; see our Odoo cost guide for current ranges and how implementation costs sit on top. Community has no licence fee but hosting, maintenance and support still need budgeting. For a business with, say, ten users, the licence saving from Community is real but modest, and often smaller than the extra maintenance effort.
Upgrades
Odoo releases a major version every year. Enterprise customers on Odoo Online are upgraded by Odoo; those on Odoo.sh or self-hosted use Odoo's upgrade service. Community users upgrade themselves, and custom modules have to be migrated with each version. This is a hidden cost of Community that surprises people in year two.
Our recommendation
If you are a business rather than a developer, and you want one system including accounts, choose Enterprise. If you have technical capacity and simple needs, Community is a legitimate starting point, and you can upgrade later. Either way, the implementation is where the real work is. We explain what that involves in ERP implementation step by step.

Key takeaways
- Community is free, open source and self-hosted. Enterprise is paid per user and adds apps, features, hosting options and official support.
- The gap is largest in accounting, which is where most businesses need the Enterprise edition.
- Community is a real option for developers and technically confident teams with simple needs. Most businesses choose Enterprise.
- Whatever edition you choose, implementation cost is separate from licences.
