Google Ads has no price list, which makes budgeting feel like guesswork. It is not. Once you understand the three numbers that matter, you can estimate what a campaign will cost and what it should return before you spend anything.
How the cost works
You choose search terms. When someone searches, Google runs an auction between advertisers who chose that term. If your ad shows and the person clicks, you pay, roughly what the next bidder would have paid, adjusted for how relevant Google thinks your ad and landing page are. You set a daily budget and Google will not exceed it over a month.
So the cost of Google Ads is whatever you decide. The real questions are what a click costs in your market, what proportion of clicks become leads, and therefore what a lead costs.
What a click costs in the UK
Click costs vary more than almost any other marketing figure. Rough patterns:
- Low: niche products, informational searches, low-competition local services. Tens of pence to a pound or two.
- Medium: most local services, eCommerce product terms, B2B software. A few pounds.
- High: legal services, financial services, insurance, emergency trades, some B2B categories. Ten pounds and well beyond per click.
Google's Keyword Planner gives estimates for your terms and location. Treat them as a starting range; real costs settle after a few weeks of data.
The three numbers
Cost per click. From the auction, as above.
Conversion rate. The proportion of clicks that become an enquiry or sale. For a well-targeted campaign with a good landing page, a few percent for eCommerce and higher for lead generation is typical, but it varies enormously.
Cost per lead. Cost per click divided by conversion rate. If clicks cost £3 and 5% of visitors enquire, a lead costs £60. Compare that with what a customer is worth to you, and the campaign either makes sense or it does not.
How much budget you need
Enough clicks to judge anything. A campaign that gets 30 clicks a month cannot tell you what converts. Aim for a budget that buys a few hundred clicks a month on your most important terms, then scale what works. A budget spread thinly across many terms and locations produces noise rather than data.
Where the money gets wasted
- Broad match keywords showing your ad for loosely related searches. Use phrase and exact match, and review the search terms report weekly.
- Missing negative keywords. "Free", "jobs", "DIY", competitor names and anything you do not offer should be excluded.
- Wrong locations and hours. Ads showing where you do not trade or when nobody answers the phone.
- Weak landing pages. Sending clicks to your home page instead of a page about the thing they searched for. Google also charges more for irrelevant pages.
- No conversion tracking. Spending without knowing which clicks became customers. Set up tracking before the first pound.
Beyond search ads
Google Shopping for product businesses, Display and YouTube for awareness, and Performance Max campaigns that combine them. Each has its own cost dynamics. Search is the place to start because intent is clearest: the person typed what they want.
Ads and SEO together
Ads give you immediate data on which searches convert. That data should shape your SEO content, which over time reduces your dependence on paid clicks. We explain the balance in Google Ads vs SEO and the fundamentals in SEO for small business.
Measuring properly
Conversion tracking in Google Ads, linked to Google Analytics 4 so you can see what happens after the click, is the minimum. See GA4 basics. Without it you are buying traffic, not leads.

Key takeaways
- You set the budget; Google Ads costs whatever you allow. The question is what a click and a lead cost in your sector.
- Click costs vary enormously, from pence for niche terms to tens of pounds for legal, financial and trade emergencies.
- You need enough budget to get a meaningful number of clicks before you can judge anything. Too little spread too thin teaches nothing.
- Most waste comes from broad match keywords, missing negative keywords and sending clicks to a weak landing page.
